Eight years ago, on this day, a new independent fighting game was announced for the Sega Dreamcast. It was called Fightoon.

In the end, it didn’t get done. But the desire to bring its essence to life has never ceased to exist.

Now it’s time to change that destiny. Work is being done again, but this time, under very different circumstances. The remains of Fightoon are being used as a base for a new fighting game. The few good ideas implemented into it will be polished, the mediocre aspects of it will be eliminated, and the missing elements will be made. It will be different from what Fightoon would have been, but will have what Fightoon failed to achieve.

This project has two main steps. The first step is to develop and release a prototype featuring two or three characters, and the second step is to release a full game featuring at least ten characters. User feedback from the prototype shall define adjustments to be made in the full version before its release.

You may have a few questions to ask:

  • Why? — Because there are some features that no fighting game has ever managed to have yet. I’m keeping those a secret for all these years, even from the people who have worked with me before, and even the highest caliber fighting games on the market have failed to make them a reality. So, I have got to do it.
  • What will be its name? — Tentative titles are “Flying Tuna”, and “TunaBrawl”.
  • What will be the history? — That’s a bit of a secret right now. But overall, the game will have a lighthearted tone.
  • Which platforms will it be released for? — Windows is a given. The prototype does have some good chances of running on the Dreamcast, but the full version may not. Porting is a time-consuming process, and the time dedicated to it may be better spent on the rest.
  • How long do you think it will take? — The prototype should take a year. Time for the completion of the full game will be estimated when the prototype is released.
  • Who is working with you now? — I’m working alone.
  • Isn’t it pretty much impossible for a single person to pull such a project off? — Yes. That doesn’t matter.
  • What is at stake? — Money; there are costs involved. Other than that, nothing’s gonna stop me now.
  • What are the challenges? — Besides the financial challenges, there are technical challenges, and management challenges. Management challenges includes marketing, hiring voice actors, choosing a distribution platform, and so on. Nothing out of the ordinary. — Personal challenges, such as time management, aren’t involved this time around.

Also, this will be a common blog for all my projects from now on.
